Camberwell Golf Club AGM Reports

President's 2023 AGM Report

Following two years of interruptions due to COVID and the Freeway closure; it was with great relief that we returned to our home at the Freeway Golf Course on March 1st this year.

Freeway Course Re-Opening:

The Boroondara Council organised a successful opening day that enabled most members to play an Ambrose Golf event – including lunch.

Financial Position:

Membership Fees have been increased from $80 to $100 for the coming year. This is the first increase in Fees for over 17 years, and reflects that Member fixed costs of VGL, GolfAus and Insurances now exceed $80. Thanks to our Treasurer, Jeff von Bergheim, for his conscientious processing of Comp Fees, the updating of member Trophy Points and Ball allocations, as well as his timely and accurate preparation of the club’s Financial Reports.

Membership Growth:

After a loss of members during our temporary time at Ivanhoe; fortunately, the club has bounced back with the signing of more than 50 new members since March. This encouraging membership surge has meant that our new Membership Manager Terry Benaim was subjected to a baptism of fire handling the paperwork; but has coped admirably getting new members up and running in a timely manner. Thanks Terry.

Sponsorship Support:

Thanks to our major sponsor’s: The Veneto Club and The Living Room Restaurant. Their generosity with voucher prizes continues to support Monday golf. We now have The House of Golf as a new major sponsor and they have been generous in their support since our return to the Freeway course.

House and Social

Since our return to Freeway, House and Social have provided a varied menu of food items as well as a great range of beverages. The club continues to be well served by Louis Filippin who has been unfailing in his cooking for monthly committee meetings throughout the year. Bruno Hermans continues to do a great job in keeping our new fridge stocked with the latest ale and soft drinks varieties.

VGL Pennant Golf:

The Pennant teams had mixed success during 2023. The Seniors had a successful year winning the Graham Division in convincing fashion 5-1 against one of our fierce rivals Altona Lakes. Thanks again to David Lowder for his continued good work as the Senior’s Manager. The Handicap (Div-3) team, have begun the task of team rebuilding after losing several regulars due to injury and our period at Ivanhoe. Winning our home match at Freeway against the ultimate division winners Northcote; has given the team renewed confidence for 2024.Thanks to Jono Wilson for his enthusiasm and contribution as Handicap Pennant Manager.

Upgraded Web-Site:

Thanks to John Miles for organising the rejuvenated Camberwell Web-Site that went live during August and has been well received by members.

Volunteer Members

Thanks again to Shane Delaney who, since 2014, continues to provide the extremely reliable preparation and processing of Thursday golf.

Committee

Thanks to all members of the 2023 Committee for their work throughout the year. Special thanks to Craig Atkins and Robert Holcombe for their assistance supporting the constantly changing playing conditions that were associated with our time at Ivanhoe and return to Freeway in March.

Bruce Bourke

President

Captain’s 2023 AGM Report

Introduction

1. As Captain of the Camberwell Golf Club, I wish to thank the President, the Committee, and our Club Members for the support provided throughout season 2023. Our transition from Ivanhoe Golf Course back to our home course at Freeway in March this year was very successful, and I think most would agree that the course is very good and presents some very challenging holes. It is great to be back in our own club rooms and to observe the comradery and social aspects of our club starting to re-establish at our traditional home.

Competitions

2. With the COVID lockdowns well behind us we have had a clear run for club competitions this year. Congratulations goes to all our winners in our weekly competitions and a very well done to our 2023 Club Champion, Michel Tuomy who backed up on his win in 2022.  A big thank you goes to our sponsors for their continued and generous support to our weekly competition prizes, and a special mention to “The House of Golf” as our new major sponsor supplying our golf vouchers and prize balls at a significant discount. As members, please continue to support these businesses that contribute to our club. So, if you are contemplating a purchase do not forget to mention the Camberwell Golf Club. I would also like to acknowledge the assistance of our Vice Captain, Michel Tuomy who stepped up during my absences, and to all those who assisted behind the scenes in the running of our major events in 2023.

3. Our Monday, Thursday, and Saturday competitions produced very solid turnouts throughout the year. Thursdays and Saturdays in particular are often booked out. The improved drainage and raising of the fairways on holes 3, 9, and 18 have greatly alleviated the heavy conditions experienced in past winters.  It is also very pleasing to see to see a lot of new members joining the club. I encourage all established members to welcome the new players and I look forward to having a round or two with them going forward.

Course Management

4. Throughout 2023 I have worked hard to build a good relationship with the new Pro-shop and senior management of the course. Greenspace Management have a very different approach to running the course limiting their activities to Pro-shop services. Course management has shifted to the Green Keeping staff employed by council.  Fortunately, our past good relationship with grounds staff has carried over and they are quite helpful.

5. I must remind members that if you have a suggestion or a compliant involving the Pro-shop or Course Management, please submit your request or observation through me as your Club Captain so there is a single point of contact to address any concerns.

6. Throughout 2023 the hazard areas have been marked more clearly for the ease of our members and the local rules for the course were updated accordingly. The Match Committee will continue to review local rules from time to time and advise off any changes that arise on the notice board in the clubroom.

Golf Australia and the Victorian Golf League

7. External competitions run by the Victorian Golf League (VGL) ran very smoothly in 2023. Our Pennant competitions ran without major incident and a big thankyou goes to Jonathan Wilson our Pennant Manager. The two Camberwell Golf Club teams were once again competitive in 2023, but pleasingly our Senior Men’s team went through the year undefeated to take home the 2023 pennant. I encourage all our members to support our pennant teams and to support our Pennant Manager throughout the season. Who knows with the influx of new members some extra pennant players look to be in the offering.

8. Once again, I encourage our members to participate in the various external competitions and special events run by Golf Australia (GA) and the VGL as these programs provide an excellent opportunity for all members to play at various courses around the Melbourne metropolitan area. This is an excellent way to meet members from other clubs and to test yourselves on a different course when representing Camberwell Golf Club.
